Barwon South Western and Grampians Allied Health Conference 2016

Conference information

The theme for the Barwon South Western and Grampians Allied Health Conference in 2016 was Facing the future: Innovation and collaboration in regional allied health. The conference was held at the Federation University campus in Horsham on Thursday, April 21, 2016.

There were 90 delegates who attended the conference and they were from a variety of allied health backgrounds.  The conference featured 3 keynote speakers, 24 allied health professionals and allied health assistants who presented their research and quality improvement projects and 3 poster presentations.  For further information on the presenters see relevant sections and documents below.

The oral presentations in the concurrent sessions were of a very high standard and the conference provided a platform to showcase some of the great projects occuring across both regions.  There was a great variety of presentations across different settings (acute, community, health promotion, etc), organisations and regions.  There was also a good mix of presenters across different allied health backgrounds.

The prize for best first time presenter went to Andrew Rank (Colac Area Health) who presented in partnership with Natalie Selenitsch (Barwon Health).  The topic of their presentation was "Improving the outcome of a young stroke patient using telehealth."

The prize for best overall presenter was awarded to Heidi Manson (South West Healthcare). The topic of her presentation was "A new grade 3 allied health assistant role in diabetes and chronic disease management."

An award was also given to Jessica Green and Ruth Alger for best poster presentation for the poster "Occupational Therapy Scooter Assessment and Training."

Conference Evaluation

An evaluation was distributed to conference delegates on the day of the conference.  The collated feedback from surveys was very positive and also provided constructive feedback for improvements.  The highlights outlined were keynote speakers, concurrent sessions and the conference overall.  The evaluation report was presented to the conference planning committee and this information will be used to plan future regional allied health conferences.
